Mr Oizo (Quentin Dupieux) is due to release his new album, All Wet, on the 30th September this year, and it’s sure to be a great one. He’s already shared a taste of what is to come in the form of his most recent single ‘End of the World’, featuring the much-memed and notorious divider of opinions, Skrillex. You can check out this single below:
As appears to be the trend with new releases in this genre, the piece seems to be very much dividing the opinions of the listeners, but at the very least the single can’t be accused of sounding like any other piece out there. The two titans of electronic music have combined their styles to create something beat-rich, unique and robotic, and we’re excited to see what the rest of the album might be like.
On the topic of his collaboration with Skrillex, Mr Oizo commented that he “could spend a month watching Sonny making beats on his laptop, he is simply the best of this new EDM generation. Since I’m the best of the old electro dudes, we had to do this tune together.”
The feeling of admiration is quite clearly mutual, as Skrillex explained that “[i]f you told the kid Sonny 10 years ago ‘you’ll make a track with Mr Oizo in the future’ I wouldn’t believe you. Fast forward to today and it’s still surreal to me. Oizo was one of my main influences when I started productions as Skrillex and being able to sit next to him and absorb his mind was a priceless experience for me.”
For Mr Oizo, this artform has been a lifelong focus. Dupieux was just 12 years old when he first decided to pick up a camera and make movies, and his creation of electronic music began shortly after as soundtracks for his films. Clearly, he had found his calling, as movies he made as a teenager were bought by Canal+. Finally, in 1997, Dupieux released his first EP under the stage name “Mr Oizo”.
Two years later, Dupieux was asked by Levi’s to create a TV commercial for them, at which point Oizo’s iconic Flat Eric was born. Eric was furry and yellow and – frankly – adorable. Mr Oizo’s track ‘Flat Beat’ was chosen as the advertisement’s backing track, prompting it to top the charts in Europe straight away. The track’s success was also shared by Flat Eric, who became an instant superstar and major pop culture icon of the 1990s.
With all of this in mind, it’s pretty understandable that those with an interest in electronic music might be a little excited about the idea of new Oizo tracks to listen to.
