In a statement released to affected students on Friday afternoon, October 2nd, Queen’s Accommodation instructed those students who did not have “any symptoms” to remain on their floor to stem the spread of the infection.

Other postgraduate students resident there have been informed that they are now required to self-isolate for 14 days, in accordance with the Government regulations.

The Gown understands that the accommodation at Mount Charles, situated between Botanic Avenue and University Road, houses approximately 8 students per flat.

Affected students are advised to contact Queens’ Accomodation via email at accommodation@qub.ac.uk

This latest development follows reports revealed earlier this week that 100 undergraduate students resident at the Elms Queen’s accommodation on the Malone Road, were required to self-isolate. This came after approximately 30 student residents at Elms tested positive for Covid-19.

Around 24,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students have commenced their studies at Queen’s. A significant proportion of students are having their lectures delivered through the ‘blended’ teaching approach, with large lectures being convened online and smaller seminar or tutorial classes being face-to-face.

As students returned to other UK universities, in Manchester and Birmingham, many were forced to go in to immediate isolation following a positive outbreak.

The uncertainty felt by much of the student body at Queen’s is unlikely to disipate as positive Covid-19 cases continue to soar in Northern Ireland. On Friday the Northern Ireland Department of Health revealed that a startling 934 further cases of Covid-19 had been reported in Northern Ireland.

Queen’s University Accommodation have been contacted and we await further clarification on this development.
