In this first of a series of features in The Gown we feature those candidates running in the Queen’s University Student Union Elections, for the next 2021-2022 academic year. The elections take place at 8am on Monday 1 March 2021.
As The Gown Editor, I am pleased to introduce Callum Dann, running for the office of Student Union President. Callum has been kind enough to send us through a few words in his own witty style focusing on his background, his time at Queen’s and his hopes, ambitions and SU21 campaign objectives.
My name is Callum Dann, studying History and Politics at Queen’s University, Belfast. I am currently running to be your next Student President! Hopefully some of you know me through my work as an RA in BT9, my fruitful first year in BT1, through my course or maybe you’ve seen my name as a committee member of the Mind Your Mood committee.
I am the only current student running to be President and have a manifesto designed to put you as the forefront of all things. Queen’s University have got away with ignoring students for too long – not anymore.
If anyone can, Callum Dann can!
While I have a large range of policies from reforming student wellbeing services, upgrading disability services, helping our awesome TAs with their pay or abolishing circuit laundry and sorting out accommodation, I have three main priorities that are realistic and can be brought in immediately to help YOU!
Firstly, a QUB Welfare Van allowing for non-appointment pop-up services across the Queen’s campus and accommodation.
Secondly, the QUB Certified Landlord Scheme to finally tackle unethical landlords and give you access to student-friendly firms.
Thirdly, I would demand a seat on the University’s Executive Operating Board to ensure COVID accountability and fight the outrageous fines and suspensions currently being handed out.
I still have one more year left of my degree, so what happens in this election will impact me as well.
Over the last year I have been helping students for free as an RA, I have lived, slept and ate the same problems as you.
I am the man with the plan, so vote Callum Dann.
The Gown invites all candidates standing for election this year to contact us in order to be given a platform to unveil their campaign objectives and pledges. Given the current public health circumstances, in which we all find ourselves, it is these times that homegrown, student-led societies, such as The Gown, are an invaluable tool for spreading the student voice.
